SIDE HUSTLES
Times are Changing

In 2025, relying solely on a single job for income is nearly impossible. A few years ago you had the option to job-hop for a big salary boost — but apparently those days are over.

So what’s the magic fix?

Side hustles.

According to LendingTree’s 2025 survey, nearly 40% of Americans have a side hustle. Main drivers for starting these pursuits include the current economy and rising inflation.

Now let’s look at these side hustles in more detail.

It’s Worth the Hustle

Self Financial, Inc. released the following chart, highlighting where Americans are spending the money they earn from side hustles. Interestingly, over one-third of respondents use these earnings for regular bills and household expenses.

The data also revealed trends in the types of side hustles people pursue. While the distribution was fairly even, 17% were focused on Online and social media, and 16% on Gig work, Uber, and Delivery.

So, how do you determine the right side hustle for you?

Here are a few key factors to consider:

Choosing the Right Venture

  • Barrier-to-Entry: Avoid “get rich quick” schemes — they don’t work. The easier it is to start, the more competition you’ll have. Instead, look for opportunities where you have a unique edge vs. the average person.

  • Time Commitment: Do you only have a couple of extra hours each week, or can you dedicate 40+? Think about the amount of time you can realistically contribute as this will greatly affect what you can pursue.

  • Passion & Interest: Only half of U.S. workers are extremely satisfied with their jobs overall. If you dislike your day job, why would you start a side hustle doing something you also dislike? This instead can be an opportunity to make money doing something you enjoy.

What Actually Works

Here are a few side hustles either myself or close friends have found success doing. Use these as inspiration to brainstorm the best option for you:

  • Junk Removal: Not everyone has a truck, the strength, or the sales and marketing skills to do this. If you do, there’s money to be made.

  • Social Media Content: Everyone has a phone, but not everyone can teach, entertain, or provide real value to viewers. Maybe you can?

  • Niche Crafts: From handmade earrings to custom woodworking, selling unique products like these can turn a hobby into a business.

One final piece of advice: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

Not every hustle will go as planned.

Lastly, it’s important to track your side hustle earnings separately from your day job — especially for tax purposes. A great way to do this is by opening a business checking account with Novo click here to get started.
