SAVE MONEY
Eggs, Milk, and Savings

Grocery shopping has become a major budget problem. Prices are up nearly 30% since 2020 thanks to inflation, supply chain chaos, and corporate profiteering.

Unfortunately, we can’t control these things as consumers, but we can control how we shop.

Here’s the exact strategy I use to keep my grocery bills low without eating junk or sacrificing quality.

My Grocery Philosophy

I’m not the “just shop at ALDI!” guy. Those stores work well for some people, but here’s my honest take:

Ultra-discount stores = ultra-processed ingredients.

These cheaper foods tend to have more preservatives and added sugar.

Personally, I’d rather spend slightly more on ingredients keeping me healthy and energized. The good news is these strategies work no matter where you shop or what your budget looks like.

The Grocery Strategy

  1. Buy in Bulk (Strategically): Buying in bulk is amazing, if you actually eat what you buy. I buy rice, oats, chicken, beef, and spices in large quantities because they last and I use them every day. This brings down the per unit cost significantly.

  2. Pack the Freezer: If you throw away leftovers or produce often, you’re losing money. Instead, you can freeze these items to use further down the line.

  3. Track Your Spending: Most shoppers think they know what they spend, until they actually check the hard data. Budget apps like Monarch or Quicken Simplifi make it easy to see exactly where your money goes, automatically.

  4. Choose Store Brands: Unless I have a strong brand loyalty, I’ll tend to buy store brand for products that are essentially the same thing just with different packaging.

  5. Avoid Impulse Buys: Do you really need the seasonal cookies or that nitro cold brew latte by the checkout counter? Here and there, treat yourself, but try to hold off as much as possible.

  6. Recognize Store Psychology: Grocery stores are literally engineered to make you spend more. For example, ever notice how essentials like bread and milk tend to be on the other side of the store from produce? This tactic requires consumers to walk across the entire store where they will certainly see something else to buy. Once you understand the game, you stop falling for the tricks.

  7. Skip Convenience: Certain items like pre-cut vegetables, bottled water, and marinated meats are convenient, but they are upcharges. If you’re in a rush, fine, but if not simply take the extra time to save more.

The Bottom Line

You can’t control food inflation, but you can control how you shop, what you buy, and how much you waste.
