BUDGETING
Best Budget App?

New budget apps pop up all the time, claiming to be “the best.” I’ve spent hundreds of hours testing them to see which ones actually deserve that title.

Monarch is one that consistently rises to the top. It has a clean interface, loyal users, and continues to roll out useful features. Still though, not everything is perfect.

Today, I’m breaking down Monarch to help you decide if it’s the right fit.

What’s Monarch?

Monarch launched in 2018 and has quickly become one of the most popular budget apps. It’s great for people who don’t need strict zero-based budgeting, but still want a simple way to build a budget, track spending, monitor goals, and more.

THE GOOD:

  1. Free Trial (7 Days): You can try it out before committing. Link your accounts, set up your budget, and see if it’s the right choice for you.

  2. Low Learning Curve: Unlike some competitors, Monarch is easy to learn. Most people understand the basics in about 15 minutes.

  3. Always Improving: Monarch consistently releases new features based on user feedback. Recent updates include credit score tracking and shared views for budgeting with a partner.

THE BAD:

  1. It’s Not Free: Monarch is fairly priced, but if you’re looking for a free option, a spreadsheet is your best bet.

  2. Syncing Issues: Some users deal with accounts not syncing or needing frequent re-authentication. I haven’t experienced this personally, but it’s a common complaint (that’s fixable).

  3. Investment Tracking: The investment tools are helpful, but will feel pretty basic to more detailed investors.

💡 My Take

Monarch is one of the best budgeting apps available today. It has more pros than cons, and it’s the option I recommend for most people. However, if you need a strict, zero-based budget system, then YNAB is a better fit.
