BUDGETING
🎁 Save More Green

Black Friday season is here, which means it’s time to buy gifts.

Before tapping that card at the checkout, consider this shocking statistic: 36% of people are still paying off last year’s holiday shopping debt. This is according to research by Consolidated Credit.

Don’t be that person.

Here’s my strategy to successfully navigate the consumer market this holiday season.

🎯 The Holiday Gift Strategy

Here’s a plan that could help your budget stay strong during the holidays:

  • Set a Total Budget (Before You Shop): Instead of winging it, actually think about the people you’re aiming to buy gifts for before starting. To visualize this, you can build a simple spreadsheet with:

    • Names of everyone you’re buying gifts for

    • Anticipated spend per person

    • Total budget limit

  • Track Your Spend: Once the budget is built, you need to actually track spend. There are two options here:

    1. Manually track using a spreadsheet (free, but time-consuming)

    2. Use a budget app like Quicken Simplifi (Black Friday limited time offer). For example, you can track your ‘gift’ category spend automatically.

  • Beware of Buy Now, Pay Later: Klarna. Affirm. Afterpay. Avoid these at all costs. If you can’t afford the gift right now, you can’t afford the gift, period.

  • Use Rewards (Responsibly): If you’re a responsible credit card user, now is a good time to check out any merchant deals offering boosted cash back. Additionally, you can use built up cash back you have saved for gift purchases.

  • Start Early: Don’t wait until it’s too late to get started. Chances are you won’t miss any massive deals, and your stress levels will be low while everyone else is frantically shopping last minute.
